Fitness is a worthy goal, but for some people, walking into a gym can be intimidating. There are so many different ways to get fit: How do you choose what is right for you? A program at the YMCA Greenville called Wellness Works can help you get started. The 12-week program combines the knowledge of a trainer/coach with some really cool technology to help you meet your goals.

You begin by meeting with one of the Y’s coaches, who assesses your current fitness levels, medical history, goals and interests. The coach then develops a personalized workout routine and enters it into a computer system. Each time you go to the Y to work out, you can log into that system at a kiosk to receive a printout of your workout or use a mobile app to see your workout.

“Your trainer will accompany you on your first workout to ensure that you know how to use the system and how to do the exercises,” said David White, senior wellness director for the Eastside YMCA. “We will meet you where you are and tailor exercises to help you get where you want to go.”

The app is another great instructional resource, says White. It contains videos that will show you how to do specific exercises. You can also use the app to track food intake and weight. During the 12-week process, your trainer will contact you by phone and email to see how you are progressing.

“These touch-ups provide accountability and make it more likely that you will reach your goals,” White said.

Six weeks into training, you meet with your trainer again for another assessment, so that you can see your progress and evaluate what is working and what is not. At the end of the 12 weeks, you meet with the trainer one last time for a final assessment.

Fitness doesn't have to be intimidating, White says. With a little help from the Y, you can find a program that is right for you.

“One of my college professors used to say, ‘Make time for exercise or the hospital will make time for you!’ That has always stuck with me,” he said.
